Christmas Spirit in the Suburbs

Having grown up in San Francisco and then living in major cities, I never thought I’d love being in the ’burbs. (Yes, I know, I should probably write suburbs.) Jay and I have been in our town for the past five years, and I’m happy to say we truly love it here. What’s to love?…

Having grown up in San Francisco and then living in major cities, I never thought I’d love being in the ’burbs. (Yes, I know, I should probably write suburbs.) Jay and I have been in our town for the past five years, and I’m happy to say we truly love it here.

What’s to love?

Less traffic, fewer crowds, and ample parking everywhere. I’ve spent a lifetime navigating constant congestion, dodging people on crowded streets, and noisy neighbors who play loud, thumping house music late into the night. At the time, I didn’t mind the busy energy of city life. When I was younger, it was exciting to go out day and night. Weaving through crowded bars, lounges, and clubs was part of my day-to-day. (It was fun at the time!)

Those environments are no longer me. Now, I find myself craving natural, green settings. That shift likely began the first time I slept in the Airstream at a state campsite. I got a taste of serenity I’d never experienced before.

As the years went on, the pendulum slowly swung away from city living toward a desire for something quiet.

Lucky for us, we found that here in our town. Not only am I just miles from my mom, aunts, and uncles, but we also live next door to the best neighbors…who have become friends.

Today, we met our friends to visit a nearby area where homeowners go all out with Christmas decorations. It feels like you’re in a movie… though I’m not quite sure which one. Just the kind where neighbors are friendly, the streets feel safe, and you know Santa will be making a visit very soon.

To be honest, this was the jolt of Christmas spirit I needed.

Just one example of the many decorated homes.
Someone sacrificed their garage space for this expansive display.
