The night before meeting JoJo, I was tucking Butters into her blanket while Lonnie lay nearby, relaxing. It was a peaceful moment for all of us.

I turned to Jay and asked, “Do you think that if we get a new dog, this will be our last night of peace?”
“I hope not,” he said. “Should we not get another dog?”
“Hmmmm….let’s just see what happens when we meet him.” I replied.

I wasn’t worried; I was just unsure. Ever since Rosie left us in 2022, we had settled into a family routine, the four of us. We eased into our mornings together, then Lonnie and Butters curled up in my office while I took client calls and Jay worked in his studio. As the day wound down, we slipped into our evening rhythm. Before you knew it, night had arrived.

Our days moved along with ease and predictability. So what happens when you add another dog to the mix? I’d read that dogs sort themselves out, figuring out their hierarchy and roles. Years ago, before I adopted Butters, my boss told me that dogs should fit into your life and routine as much as possible, not turn your world upside down.

On Sunday, when we brought JoJo home, all eight pounds of him, I kept my former boss’s words in mind. He will fit into our lives, I told myself. And he certainly is. Jay mentioned that it feels like JoJo has always been here, and I agree.

Today, as I worked through a pile of year-end paperwork, I looked up from my computer and saw something special: a sense of belonging and love among our doggies.
