Airstream Bambi sat outside our house for a couple of days.
The goal was to get JoJo, our 10-month-old puppy, used to it before our next trip. As much as I love encountering new experiences while on the road, a puppy potentially freaking out in the new space wasn’t one I wanted.
I spent two days doing things in the trailer with JoJo and Lonnie (who is now the veteran road dog). I cleaned up the dust from months of not traveling. I tried to create what traveling in the trailer might feel like once we’re out on the road again. The dog beds, sitting at the dinette, writing, and playing around with my camera on a tripod.
JoJo did well. After going through every inch of the trailer with his nose, he finally settled down into his dog bed. He looked up at me, sighed, and laid his head down.

Sometimes, JoJo reminds me of Butters.

In hindsight, what started as me getting JoJo used to the Airstream may really have been about me getting used to Bambi… without Butters in physical form.
To embrace change, you have to fully immerse yourself, and as hard as it is, go all in. I think that’s what I did last weekend. I stepped into Bambi, wondering if it would feel sad, bittersweet, and difficult. Yes, all of those things.
But the other thing I didn’t expect to feel is… hope.
